Teeth Whitening

Are your teeth looking a little dull in colour? We can fix that for your at Personal Dental Care and Adelaide Dental Centre with teeth whitening!

The tooth is made up of three sections or layers. The inner most layer is the pulp (nerve) the middle layer is the dentine and the outer most layer is the enamel. Dentine contains the colour of the tooth while enamel is semi translucent a bit like frosted glass. Tooth whitening uses a hydrogen peroxide-based gel to open up the tubules that make up the tooth structure to then flush out the contents with the tooth that contain the colour.

Here at Personal Dental Care and Adelaide Dental Centre we use the POLA Office tooth whitening system. There are two different options:

  • Take home
  • In chair

Take home involves taking dental impressions of your teeth, making special moulds from those impressions, and then giving you those moulds with the POLA Office take home whitening gel. It takes approximately 2 to 4 weeks to achieve the maximum result.

In chair involves an appointment at one of our dental clinics. The teeth are isolated from the soft tissues (gums, cheeks, tongue, lips) and saliva and a barrier is placed over the gums to protect them from the whitening gel acidity. The gel is then placed on the teeth and activated with a specialised light for a set period before being wash off and repeated. You then go home with an instant result.

It is recommended that you also get a take home kit with your in-chair whitening as the colour with over time due to the things that we eat and drink every day. You then “top up” you colour every 3, 6 or 12 months. We offer a special if you decide to get them both together.

A fun trick with teeth is colour contrast. Try wearing some red lipstick! Your white teeth will stand out even more! It is also why you find people with darker skin colours also seem to have whiter teeth and people with lighter skin seem to have yellower teeth. Contrast can make a difference.
